Backwards Driving (11/15/2024)

I drove backwards, tonight.

No, damnit, not in reverse, nor in the wrong lane.

Due to unnatural circumstances of TarNation, my routes were disrupted.

They're doing roadwork on Route 202, left of Nimitz St. t'ords Greene. If I had to guess, I'd reckon they're burying plumbing for the newly-built house at the plot where we used to see monarch butterfly chrysalises on the milkweed. The mammary plants are all torn-up, now. Those 'pillars'll have to find someplace else to grab a bite & pupate. No more shiny little green homes; just one bland wooden structure.

Looking left from the stop-sign at Nimitz where I exit the neighborhood, the street was all lit-up like the scariest behemoth of a semi-truck was barreling over yonder, but the truck never came. It gave me pause, for a moment, 'til I saw the flagging signs & realized they were construction floodlights.

Anyhow, I continued the night's joyride as usual, going right down 202, left onto Stetson Rd, then left onto College St. Normally I'd start-out (& usually also end) by continuing along College until I reach the flashing-red-light stop-sign at Sawyer Rd, where I'd go left to get back onto 202, then down Stetson again, then back onto College where I'd take a left onto Merrill Rd, then left onto 202.

As I wrote in a previous post, that travelogue of when I saw that great, green meteor, that is the basic unit of my night-driving. I can either repeat that indefinitely, or continue onto other thoroughfares.

Due to the aforementioned one-lanery jazz on the state route, I wanted to avoid that completely. Instead of going left onto Sawyer Rd, I went right.

That alone is not unusual for me. I often go along that stretch, moreso recently than in the past, either in that direction, or vice-versa from Sabattus.

So, here's the play-by-play:

Home=St. Patrick Ave in Lewiston, left onto Nimitz St, right onto Rte. 202, left onto Stetson Rd, left onto College St, right onto Sawyer Rd in Greene, Sawyer Rd. becomes Greene St in Sabattus, right onto Main St, right onto Route 126 a.k.a. Sabattus Rd, left onto Pond Rd in Lewiston, left onto Randall Rd, right onto Grove St. (where Lewiston ends & Sabattus begins again here, or if it even does, I'm not sure), terrible sharp right onto Crowley Rd, right onto S. Lisbon Rd, right onto Old Lisbon Rd, Old Lisbon Rd. becomes Webster St, left onto Alfred A. Plourde Parkway, right onto Westminster St, across Lisbon St at the light where Westminster becomes Pleasant St, left onto Commercial St, Commercial becomes Ferry Rd, Ferry Rd. becomes River Rd at the bend (next to that ominous blocky Polish-flag-painted house at Bell Farms which unlocks some psychotic feeling of criminal derangement within me, & reminds me of playing "Electric State DarkRP" on Roblox, in which I envision myself living as a scavenger-thief in the wasteland), keep left on River Rd. until it becomes Lincoln St, left onto the bridge where Main St. in Lewiston becomes Court St. in Auburn (both Rte. 202), left onto Minot Ave, left onto Manley Rd, Manley Rd. becomes Hotel Rd, right onto Kittyhawk Ave. around the airport, right onto Lewiston Junction Rd. where it smells like a combination of pine-sap & those chemically mini powdered-donuts, left back onto Hotel Rd. (looped around airport), Hotel Rd. turns back into Manley Rd, across Minot Ave. onto Court St, left onto Park Ave, right onto Mt. Auburn Ave, across Turner St. at the intersection to get onto Veteran's Memorial Bridge which crosses back into Lewiston & becomes Russell St, left onto College St, keeping on College across Montello St. at the four-way, left onto Stetson, right onto Main St. Rte 202, left onto Nimitz, right onto St. Patrick Avenue, then home-sweet-home at last.

It was a nice ride. Listened to all of the album "Nurse" by 'Therapy?' One of my favorite albums, which I was introduced to by my friend Grace as we rode along the Golden Road past Millinocket on 04/08/2024 as we waited to watch the total solar eclipse on the bridge at Abol Campground with the Katahdin towering behind us (I cried).

Then, I'd queued the album "Soundtracks for the Blind" by 'Swans', which I've never listened to all the way through. I still haven't, & I was shocked to find I hadn't even made it halfway through by the time I got home (it was satisfyingly timed that the song 'Volcano' ended precisely as I parked my car at home, & that's not even the end of Disc 1).

Yes, it was a carefree drive, except that some brigand got behind me after the early four-way-stop on Manley Rd. & bit my car's shiny metal bumper even though I was going a 'comfortably average' speed. I had half the mind to slow down right to the uncomfortably mandated speed just to piss them off, but they illegally passed me on a double yellow line before I had the chance.

I don't do petty things like that because I think life's too short, & road rage's not worth the hypertension, but some things do piss me off.

Throughout the drive, I smoked five cigarettes, within a margin of error that maybe it was actually six, but I think I counted correctly. It was so cold my legs would violently shake in the wind from my windows when I'd puff tar. It's a good deterrent against smoking so often, but obvious comforts like that have never stopped me from pursuing my self-destructive vices.

On that note, I'm going to throw-on my sweatpants & slipper-socks, button-up my comfy green coat, & go brave the wind to sit in my car with the windows down & no heat on to smoke another fucking cigarette, because something in my head doesn't let me sleep until that last smoldering death-taco before bed.

Toodaloo - fare well. Love y'all.

(P.S: the drive occurred 11/14; it was after midnight by the time I got home & wrote this. It is currently 1:17 AM. Okay. Bundle up & sleep tight)
